Boston's Leader Mayor Wu Responds to Trump's Threat to Relocate World Cup Games from Boston
The mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, implied that the municipality was prepared for a face-off with President Donald Trump regarding his assertion that he could order FIFA to remove World Cup tournament matches from the stadium in Foxborough, situated 22 miles south-west of Boston.
Wu spoke on a local podcast recently to answer criticism from the Trump administration, which had described her as "radical left." President Trump had warned that he would call the head of FIFA if Boston did not "address its issues."
A great deal of it is locked down by agreement so that no one, even if they live in the White House, can undo it.
Wu added, "We're in a world where for attention, for power, to test limits ... ongoing threats ... are issued at individuals and communities who stand their ground and submit or be obedient to a divisive plan."
Mayor Wu further stated, "We are going to continue being who we are, and that means, sadly, we are going to be in a conversation that is challenging what Boston stands for." She finished by stressing her support for the Boston, declaring, "Fully committed for our city."
The President's Comments and FIFA's Involvement
Recently, Infantino was photographed with Trump at the Gaza summit in Egypt. Infantino has also visited the Oval Office and given World Cup tournament and club championship awards to the president as presents.
Earlier, President Trump was asked about unrest in South Boston that included a police vehicle being set on fire. Trump responded, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Infantino – the head of the organization, who's great."
He continued, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would do that. He might not prefer it. But he would do it very easily." The president also specifically targeted Mayor Wu, stating, "Their mayor is ineffective ... she's radical left, and they're taking over parts of Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"
Past Warnings and 2026 World Cup Information
Trump has previously suggested that he would take the similar discussion with the FIFA president about relocating games from Seattle and San Francisco, which are among the 16 locations across the continent.
The United States is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be held from June 11 to 19 July next summer.
